Today I will be posting on a very important subject I just discovered while meeting with a few marketers oever the week. This is crazy and will help you understand why al lot of marketers fail to make any money at all within the industry. This is not putting into consideration the poor compensation plans and hyped income disclosures some companies make. However this is is simply based on individual mindset and readiness to work. In my opinion if you have changed network marketing companies 8 times then there is an underlining problem.

The Employee Mindset Trap
Majority of people that come into the network marketing industry are people that want to generate extra income to what they are already doing. Most people do not have the intentions of making it a full time career but a side income or side project. This mindset in itself is a trap but lets look at the major reason why the employee mindset is the most dangerous trap waiting for newbie marketers.
How To Spot The Employee Mindset
Recently I did a presentation for a contact who did not like the idea of using the company product for himself and his family. Although that was not a pre-requisite to join the business I was somewhat confused. I simply could not get the logic behind recommending a product you have not used yourself to his contacts. So i decided to do a little digging. After asking a couple of ‘why’s I discovered he was only interested in selling off the company products and making a commission. This is great but one more thing I could not understand was “why not be sure you are selling the right product to your contacts?”
Well it turned out there were a few reasons and the major reason was to make sure he was handling everything himself. This was very strange to me so at this point I had to decide to get him in the team. “I am sorry BUT this is NOT for you. I cannot work with you in my team”. I simply packed my stuff and ended the meeting right there. Now you might say “but we need to sign people up to because we need people”. No they need us!
Ok, so How do You Know an Employee Mentality
- They want to be responsible for everything
If you have an employee mindset, you are in the trap of wanting to do everything by yourself. This is not to say you have to depend solely on your team (of course you need to lead by example). But when you are trapped with the idea that you need to be in control of everything, then there is a problem.
- Its all about them and their results
It is all about them. They cannot see the bigger picture about the ripple effect to the decisions we make. To them the world is just about them and their “puny” little results. It’s not about the team, in fact they cannot see past their noses.
- It is a side project so little or no committement
Most people that get invovled in network marketing do so on a part-time basis. In fact this is the best way to start out until you know what you are doing. However, most people see it as that side little thing so they do not committ fully to their business. Afterall, its a side little project. They are used to being managed so they cannot manage themselves.
- They run solo
There is nothing like team work in their vocabulary. They do not know what it means to work with others. As leaders we should be able to work solo and also work in a team. There are times when you team members will let you down but you know how to work by yourself. Ignoring them completely and forgetting they are there is a complete no-no.
- They don’t develop leaders. Its about selling!
Network marketing is not just about selling your company products. To stay in business long you need to raise leaders. You cannot survive doing this by yourself. You need leaders around you to help you build.
So How Do You Escape The Employee Mentality Trap?
- Understand you are in business
- Build for today and tomorrow not just today
- Change your Idealogies about team work
- Get training from other successful leaders
